Station History

Welcome to WVFI, The Voice of the Fighting Irish! You are visiting a part of Notre Dame history starting in 1935 with the Notre Dame Radio Club.

Notre Dame became one of the first universities in America to use carrier-current technology in 1947. WND soon found a new home in O'Shaughnessy Hall. The station featured live coverage of Notre Dame sports along with popular music of the day and an occasional dramatic presentation.

In 1953, the station changed its call letters to WNDU. Shortly after this, those call letters were soon taken by the University for their new commercial TV and radio operations.

Eventually the original carrier current on-campus station was spun off into a separate organization WVFI, The Voice of the Fighting Irish. While WVFI is currently broadcast via the internet, it hasn't always been that way. In 2000, WVFI decided to broadcast exclusively online.

Most of the music played on WVFI is independent label "college rock" music, but we also feature programming slots of hip hop, punk rock, hardcore, classic rock, comedy/talk, and sports talk.

WVFI is run by an Executive Board made entirely of students. For information on the current student leaders, see the "Staff" page. Additionally, all of WVFI's funding comes from the Student Media Office and donations from Alumni and fans. Our Student Media Advisor is Pete Farrough.

WVFI sponsors on-campus concerts in conjunction with Legends of Notre Dame, Student Union Board and others. Bands WVFI has brought to Notre Dame include The Unicorns, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Erin McKeown, Pedro the Lion, Hey Mercedes, and Will Oldham.

Famous WVFI staffers include former ND head football coach Charlie Weis ('78), who worked as a Sports Broadcaster, nationally-acclaimed musician Ted Leo ('94), who was a DJ and a Music Director, and The Ratboys.
